The High Wycombe Central Aid Society is a Registered Charity (Registered Charity No. 201445) established to help needy people in the High Wycombe area. Established by Frances Dove in 1906, it is the oldest independent charity in High Wycombe, having been in existence for over 100 years.
We provide information and advice on a wide range of topics, small grants, plus clothing and food on a limited basis, to those in need of help in the High Wycombe area. This help is provided regardless of age, religion, or ethnic background.
The Society also runs a Furniture Project which collects donated furniture and furnishings, mainly for sale to those on low incomes. The Project also provides items of furniture for free to those in the greatest need as part of the Society's small grants scheme.
If you would like to become a Friend of the Society, and attend Society functions and receive two newsletters per year, an annual subscription of £5 per year minimum is requested - contact us for more details or download the application form here.
Warehouse and Collections Status / Notices
Current Warehouse Status
Update 26/1/10 : we have now caught up with our backlog of missed collections and deliveries caused by the recent snow and ice. We are booking in collections as normal, with an average 1 week waiting time.
We currently have lots of tables and table sets in stock, so are only collecting more as and when we have space. We are also only able to take limited numbers of TV cabinets as we have lots of these in stock.
We continue to be selective over the items we pick up, and have raised our delivery charge to £10, refusing many types of items that are slow sellers or impossible to deliver efficiently. It has become noticeable how hard it is to get basic items like beds. This owes much to existing retailers of new beds collecting old beds for recycling from their customers. If you know of anyone wanting to find a home for an old bed in good condition, point them in our direction!
It’s that season again. I am sitting here watching the fair set up for the Christmas lights in the High Street and it’s only November! We have just given some hot food to a man who’s living on the streets and has not received a penny from the DWP for 6 weeks. Quite why people come to this town from other parts is a mystery to me. They are usually getting away from something they don’t like. I am pleased to think that the Night Shelter will be reopening in January for 3 months, as it has seen positive results over the last two years.
After an initial trial, we have launched our Furniture Project Ebay Outlet! Taking advantage of Missionfish, a partnership with Ebay's charitable outreach arm, we have set up a presence on Ebay that will allow us to sell items and have the seller fees refunded to us from Ebay. (Many other large charities already use this service, but the work involved in registering your charity and validating the details often puts off smaller charities like us.)
To see what we currently have for auction, please see the 'Furniture Project Ebay Outlet' item in the right hand column.
